What are screen printed transfers?

A real screen print, on paper. Ready for your press.

Screen printed transfers are plastisol ink screen printed onto release paper, one colour at a time, then cured to gel so they stay ready to press. You apply them with a heat press in seconds. At Ton Atelier in Laval, Québec, we print them on 12″ × 16″ gang sheets, up to 8 Pantone-matched colours.

  1. Screen printing plastisol ink onto transfer paper on a flatbed press

    We screen print your sheet

Each colour is printed separately in plastisol ink mixed to your Pantone in our shop.

  2. Gel-cured screen printed transfer sheets stacked after the dryer
    2

    Cured to gel, then shipped

The ink is cured just enough to hold on the paper — fully cured only when you press it.

  3. Pressing a screen printed transfer onto a hoodie with a heat press

You press it, peel it hot

About 8 seconds on your heat press. The ink cures into the fibres — soft, opaque, done.

How much do screen printed transfers cost?

$1.20 a sheet at 500. About 10¢ a left-chest logo.

You pay per 12″ × 16″ sheet. Two things set the price: how many sheets you order and how many colours are on them. A sheet costs the same whether it holds one design or twenty — so the fuller the sheet, the less each print costs.

Ultra Soft, 1 colour, price per 12″ × 16″ sheet. From 100 to 500 sheets, the price per sheet drops by 54%. 3 colours on 60 sheets: $6.10 a sheet.

What one sheet holds — and what each print costs

Design sizePer sheetPer print at 100 sheetsPer print at 500 sheets
Cap / pocket · 2.5″20$0.13$0.06
Left chest · 3.5″12$0.22$0.10
Mid front · 8″ × 7.5″2$1.30$0.60
Full front · 11″ × 14″1$2.60$1.20

1 colour, Ultra Soft. Mix sizes and designs on the same sheet — a full front plus small logos in the gaps.

Four ways to lower your price

  1. Fill every sheet. Gang up logos from several jobs — the sheet costs the same full or half empty.
  2. Order more sheets at once. 500 sheets cost less than half per sheet compared with 100.
  3. Keep colours down. Each colour is its own screen. 1 colour on 60 sheets is $3.50; 3 colours, $6.10.
  4. Reorder the same art. Your Pantone formulas are on file, so there's nothing to re-match.

How to apply screen printed transfers

Prepress. Press. Peel hot.

A heat press is required — a household iron won't cure plastisol. Settings by transfer type:

TransferTemperatureTimePressurePeel
Ultra Soft330–350°F7–10 sFirmHot
Reflective300°F8 sFirmHot
Ultra Stretchable310–330°F7–10 sMedium to firmHot or cold
Puff350°F8 sMedium — too much flattens the puffHot, right away
Metallic · Shimmer330–350°F7–10 sFirmHot
Prepress the garmentA few seconds first to drive out moisture and flatten the fabric.
More isn't betterHigher temperature or pressure gives a less opaque print. Stay in the range.
Protect the garmentCover with Teflon or parchment to avoid scorching, especially on metallic.

Screen printed transfers vs DTF transfers

We make both. Here's when to pick which.

Same durability — the press settings matter more than the method. The difference is feel, colour and quantity.

Screen printed transfers FAQ

Screen printed transfers, answered.

How are screen printed transfers made?
On a flatbed screen printing press, like a regular screen print — but onto release paper instead of a garment. Each colour is printed separately in plastisol ink, then cured to gel temperature so it stays ready to press.
How much do screen printed transfers cost?
You pay per 12″ × 16″ sheet. With 1 colour on Ultra Soft: $3.50 a sheet at 60 sheets, $2.60 at 100, $2.10 at 200, $1.50 at 280 and $1.20 at 500. At 500 sheets, a 3.5″ left-chest logo (12 per sheet) works out to about $0.10 a print. More colours cost more: 3 colours on 60 sheets is $6.10 a sheet.
Is there a minimum order?
No minimum number of sheets. Because the price per sheet drops fast with quantity, screen printed transfers make the most sense from about 24 pieces of a design. For fewer, DTF transfers usually cost less.
What is the maximum size?
The printable area is 12″ × 16″ — the size of the gang sheet.
How many colours can I print?
Up to 8 on Ultra Soft, up to 6 on Ultra Stretchable. Reflective comes in one colour, Cool Gray 7. Metallic and Shimmer inks can be mixed with regular colours.
Can you match my Pantone colour exactly?
Yes. We mix plastisol ink in our Laval shop to your Pantone Coated codes — 100% matched — and keep the formula, so repeat orders match year after year.
Which lasts longer — screen printed transfers or DTF?
Both are equally durable. How you press matters most: right temperature, time and pressure. Pressed correctly, they go through the washer and dryer like a direct screen print.
How do I apply screen printed transfers?
With a heat press. For Ultra Soft: prepress the garment, then 330–350°F for 7–10 seconds at firm pressure, and peel hot. Puff is 350°F for 8 seconds at medium pressure; Ultra Stretchable is 310–330°F and can be peeled hot or cold.
What fabrics can I press them on?
Cotton, cotton/poly blends, polyester and tri-blends. For stretchy garments — Lycra, nylon, spandex, leggings and activewear — use Ultra Stretchable.
How long does it take?
Printed and shipped in 3 to 5 business days, then 2 business days to Québec and Ontario or 4 elsewhere in Canada. Express delivers in 1 business day.
